Why We Ask Questions First

Toyota & Lexus Ignition Systems

Older Toyota and Lexus vehicles used 8-cut sidewinder keys; later models moved to 10-cut high-security keys with a transponder chip built in. On most of these vehicles the key and the ignition wear together over the years - a worn key can accelerate wear inside the ignition tumblers, and a worn ignition can make even a good key harder to turn. Newer Toyota and Lexus vehicles use Smart Key / Push-to-Start systems that remove the mechanical turn entirely.

When we cut a replacement to factory specification and the ignition itself is still in good shape, that's often enough to resolve a "hard to turn" complaint without touching the ignition at all.

Key Won't Turn vs. Key Turns But Won't Start

These are two different problems, and telling them apart matters:

Broken Key or Foreign Object?

A snapped-off key blade and a foreign object stuck in the same cylinder look similar from the outside but come out differently. We check which one we're actually dealing with before attempting extraction, so we don't push debris in deeper or damage the cylinder trying to pull out a key that was never in there in the first place.

Don't Force It

Forcing a key that won't turn is the most common way a simple worn-key situation turns into a broken key stuck in the ignition. If it's not turning smoothly, stop and call rather than working it back and forth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know exactly what's wrong before I call?

No. Tell us what's happening and we'll ask a few questions to narrow it down before recommending anything.

Does a hard-to-turn key always mean a new ignition?

No - a worn key or a cylinder that needs servicing is often the actual cause. We check the key first since it's the simpler, less expensive fix when it applies.

What if my key turns but the car still won't start?

That points toward the transponder/immobilizer side rather than the mechanical lock. We'll check that separately from the ignition cylinder itself.
