My Nissan or Infiniti Key Won't Turn or Isn't Detected. What Should I Do?

Tell us what's happening - Twist Knob, Intelligent Key, or a traditional key - and we'll take it from there.

Nissan Infiniti ignition and key problems - Fast Valdosta Locksmith, Valdosta GA

You don't need to know whether your Nissan or Infiniti uses a traditional key, a Twist Knob system, or an Intelligent Key - tell us what's happening and we'll figure it out together.

Twist Knob vs. Intelligent Key

Many 2000s-2010s Nissan and Infiniti models use a "Twist Knob" ignition - you insert the fob and physically turn it - rather than a true push-button start. Newer Intelligent Key vehicles use push-button start with no insert at all. The two systems fail differently, so telling us which one your vehicle uses (or letting us confirm it) matters before we recommend anything.

Some Twist Knob Nissan and Infiniti vehicles support a mechanical "Service Key" option - a backup/valet-style key useful for programming or emergency situations. We'll confirm whether that applies to your model.

"Key Not Detected"

On Intelligent Key vehicles, a "key not detected" message is most often a dead or weak fob battery, or a communication fault - not a lost key. Check the battery first before assuming the worst.

If your vehicle is still running and the Intelligent Key is lost or misplaced, do not shut the engine off - call us first. Restarting a Nissan Intelligent Key vehicle without a recognized key on hand is a much more complicated situation than one that's still running.

Push-to-Start Nissan and Infiniti vehicles can also refuse to auto-lock the doors if a recognized key is left inside the car - that's expected behavior, not a malfunction.

Older Keys and Broken-Key Extraction

Older Nissan keys (8-cut systems predating the mid-2000s shift to 10-cut high-security keys) are more prone to snapping inside a worn lock or ignition than modern high-security blanks. If a key has already broken off, don't try to work it out yourself.

There's also a documented special case: 1999 Nissan Maxima and Infiniti I30 models use a distinct key system that needs to be handled differently than other Nissans of that era - tell us the exact model year if this applies to you.

Repair vs. Replacement

Not every Nissan or Infiniti ignition complaint needs a new ignition switch. A worn key, a Twist Knob cylinder that can be serviced in place, or a weak fob battery are all far more common than the ignition assembly itself failing - we check the simpler causes first and explain what we find before recommending any repair.

Key Turns But Car Won't Start

If your Nissan or Infiniti key turns or the Twist Knob rotates normally but the engine won't start, that points toward the transponder/Intelligent Key communication side rather than a mechanical ignition problem - the same "Key Not Detected" logic above often applies here too. We check the security/immobilizer system separately from the ignition cylinder rather than assuming the cylinder is at fault.

Nissan and Infiniti have used several generations of anti-theft key technology over the years - from early transponder chips through Intelligent Key proximity systems - and older keys are more likely to wear or need attention as they age.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know exactly what's wrong before I call?

No. Tell us what's happening and we'll ask a few questions to narrow it down before recommending anything.

My dash says “key not detected” but the car is running - what do I do?

Do not shut the engine off. Call us first - a weak fob battery or communication fault while the car is running is a much simpler situation than one where the engine has already been turned off.

Is a Twist Knob ignition the same as Push-to-Start?

No - Twist Knob vehicles still require inserting and turning the fob, while true Push-to-Start Intelligent Key vehicles don't require an insert at all. We'll confirm which one your vehicle uses.
